Glass Pipes: A History

The genesis of the pipe dates back to 2000 BC (about 4,000 years ago). Ancient pipes constructed from copper were buried alongside mummy tokers in Egyptian tombs.

The North American Indigenous’ choice piece is the Calumet — a long pipe made from a wooden stem connected to a carved pipestone bowl, or other material, commonly called a “peace-pipe.” They smoke pipes ritually to settle rivals with other tribes and call upon them when advice is needed. Historically, people made pipes with wood, bones, stone, and clay and are typically used for ceremonial use.

Natural glass has always existed. Neanderthals and tribes used volcanic black glass — obsidian — to make decorations and weapons. Egyptians used molten sand, and some other earthy stuff put into molds. Glass was hard to create, so it was typically smaller, super expensive as time moved on. However, when someone figured out you could get it hot, stick it to the end of a tube, blow through the tube and make a bubble, it changed the glass game forever.

Glass pipes continue to thrive forty-five years after their first patent. Today’s mainstream pipe industry and styles are credited to Bob Snodgrass: vagabond, deadhead, and famous glassblower. In 1986 he traveled with the Grateful Dead selling his hand-blown glass pipes along the way. Snodgrass experimented with adding silver and gold in borosilicate glass to add color, and the art of fuming was born. The industry expanded, and head shops were opening everywhere — until doomsday 2003. Twelve million taxpayer dollars and Operation Pipe Dreams shattered the drug paraphernalia business. The feds raided businesses and homes, including Tommy Chong’s, for marketing his son’s bong business. To prove a point, Chong was sentenced to nine months in prison.

In recent history, smoking paraphernalia has made a comeback — thanks to wider social acceptance. As a result of the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes in 2016 and today’s recreational purposes, hand blown glass pipes popularity and sales have grown.
